Meaning and Purpose in Life

Every now and then a Bible verse becomes particularly alive to me and indelibly sears itself upon my heart. In recent times Hebrews 1:3 has been that culprit. Hebrews 1:3 reads ‘He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power’.

That last phrase he upholds the universe by the word of his power has come to mind countless times in the last few months. The word ‘upholds’ is literally the word ‘carrying’. Therefore Jesus, who is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact photocopy of God’s nature, is carrying our world each day by the word of his power. So just as his Father created the universe with a word, so too does God the Son uphold the universe each day with a word.

What we see here is not only the fact that the Son is intimately connected to this world but that is it also heading somewhere. Jesus is carrying this world along each day by the word of his power to its appointed end.

Some would tell us that just like a clockmaker makes a clock God created the world and left it to do its thing. But this verse stands directly against that kind of foolishness. Indeed the Son is carrying, and has always been carrying, our universe by the word of his power. He is directly at work in this world we live in. He’s upholding it and carrying it to its appointed end.
All of which casts bright light on our daily existence. Sometimes when I wake up I’m tempted to think that today will be just like the day before. I’m tempted to think that nothing is really happening in my life. But this verse says otherwise. According to Hebrews 1:3 every day is one day closer to the designated end of the world, because every day is being carried along by the Son.

So when you wake up tomorrow and go to work it isn’t pointless monotony. It’s valuable and important because everything you do is being carried along and sustained by the Son who is the heir of the universe. Therefore nothing in your life is menial or meaningless but rather of the highest importance. For the Son is carrying you each day in whatever you do whether big or small.
